Docklands Light Railway - The future of DLR

Growth in Docklands

  • More residents, more jobs

DLR carries out detailed forecasting of population and employment growth in Docklands, to inform our service plans and upgrades. This is done by looking at planning applications in the Docklands and future “masterplans” for big development areas, and combining them all together. The result is a forecast of the number of home and jobs up to 2031.

Some particular areas of large development drive this growth, including an expanding Canary Wharf, the massive redevelopment around Stratford (including the Olympic Park), and more homes and jobs in the Royal Docks.

These forecasts are fed through to a computer model of the transport network. This model takes into account the forecasts and information from rest of TfL on the services being run on DLR, London Underground, rail and buses, and predicts the number of people using each part of the DLR.

    Current and forecast patronage

Over 70 million trips are expected to be made on the DLR over 2010 – around 250,000 per day on a normal weekday. This will rise to over 100 million in 2012, thanks to the opening of the Stratford International extension and the Olympics.

Demand on DLR will continue to rise until 2018, when Crossrail opens, and provides a new route between central London, Canary Wharf and Custom House.
