Crossrail is a new railway across London
linking Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west with Shenfield and Abbey Wood in
the east. A new tunnel will be built under central London and once opened
Crossrail will provide direct services between Canary Wharf, the City, the West
End and Heathrow Airport. More information about the route is available here – http://www.crossrail.co.uk/route/maps/
Crossrail will interchange with DLR at several
locations:
- A new station is under
construction at Canary Wharf, located underneath the dock south of Poplar DLR
station. Once the development is complete on the adjoining North Quay site a
direct link will be provided between the Crossrail Canary Wharf station and
Poplar DLR station.
- A new set of platforms will be
built at Custom House beside the DLR platforms: these will also have a new
ticket hall above and a new entrance form Freemasons Road to the north of the
DLR station
- At Stratford the platforms
currently used by National Express East Anglia for services to Shenfield will
be converted to use by Crossrail.
Building Crossrail will have an impact on
DLR and its services. The most notable impact will be the rebuilding of Pudding
Mill Lane station. This is because the Crossrail tunnel portal for the line to
Stratford where the DLR Pudding Mill Lane station currently is.
A summary of changes to DLR are:
- Relocating the DLR track to
Stratford to accommodate Crossrail’s tunnel portal, including rebuilding
Pudding Mill Lane station. The new station will have capacity to serve the
Olympic station in “legacy phase”, after the 2012 Games have taken place.
- Relocating the track between
Royal Victoria and Custom House to accommodate Crossrail’s tunnel portal, and
construction of new platforms at Custom House station.
Further details of the construction will
become available as construction contracts are awarded to bidders. Up-to-date
information is available at www.crossrail.co.uk.
