The extension continues the route of the London City Airport Extension across the River Thames to Woolwich town centre. Woolwich is a key priority regeneration area in the Thames Gateway.
The benefits of the DLR Woolwich Arsenal extension include:
- Improved transport links, connecting Woolwich to London City Airport, Stratford, Canary Wharf and Bank. The most significant improvements in public transport accessibility are to be found in Newham and Tower Hamlets as well as the southern parts of Camden, Islington and Hackney and to the City, which will experience a significant reduction in travel time
- Supporting the regeneration of Woolwich and the southern Royal Docks by boosting the creation of new jobs, homes, shops, education and leisure facilities and opportunities on route; and
- Direct interchange with main line services on the North Kent line, the planned Greenwich Waterfront Transit scheme, over 100 bus routes, eight Underground lines and coach, taxi and riverboat services
DLR has been keen to ensure that the extension will, as far as is reasonably practicable, have a minimal impact on the local environment and, where possible, enhance it. In accordance with the Transport and Works Act (TWA) Applications Rules, DLR's specialist independent environmental consultants, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), have undertaken a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The 2012 Games
The Royal Artillery Barracks will hold the shooting events and accommodate crowds of up to 7,500 per day. The extension will provide spectators with a frequent, safe and reliable transport service to Woolwich and the other competition venues.
"The Woolwich Arsenal extension will provide a fast and efficient link between the Olympic Park and the equestrian and shooting events. And it will leave an important legacy for the communities it will serve in the years after 2012."
Hugh Sumner - Director of Olympic Transport of the Olympic Delivery Authority.
