Four Bid to Build Woolwich

Docklands Light Railway Ltd (DLRL) - part of Transport for London (TfL) - today announced that it has completed the pre-qualification stage in the competition to appoint a Concessionaire to design, finance, build, maintain and make available the Woolwich Extension.

The following four prospective consortia had sought pre-qualification and all have been successful in this procedure:

Amec/RBS Joint Venture - AMEC/The Royal Bank of Scotland
MVBB Consortium - Morgan Est/Vinci Concessions/Bachy Soletanche/Barclays
WA Rail Link - Mitsui, Mowlem, Nishimatsu
Woolwich City Link - Hochtief (UK)/HSBC/Innisfree

The invitation to Tender has been issued with return due in early September 2004. It is anticipated that the appointment will be made in Spring 2005 with the extension becoming available by the end of 2008.

The £159m, 2.5km extension will run from King George V station in North Woolwich (now being constructed under a PFI Concession as part of the London City Airport extension) under the Thames to Woolwich Arsenal. The project will involve construction of bored tunnels and a new DLR station at Woolwich Arsenal which will provide an interchange with main line rail services and other transport modes.
