Identifying Destination and Route Options
Work on reviewing destination options for the extension concluded in Spring 2007 following technical work as well as stakeholder and public consultation. From the views expressed and appraisal work on the options, Dagenham Dock emerged as the most appropriate terminus option for the extension, with two alternatives to terminate either to the north or to the south of the existing Dagenham Dock station.
Route options developed for the extension have sought to take into account a number of key challenges in the area, which include:
- Securing a route through existing and planned development sites.
- Crossing of the River Roding whilst allowing for shipping to continue to use the river.
- Crossing of roads, railways and avoiding electricity pylons.
- Fixing station locations that fit in with their local environment.
- Agreeing a solution that allows a terminus to be built at the Dagenham Dock station area
A shortlist of route options have been identifed for the extension which are currently the subject of public and stakeholder consultation and further technical review. The section of route through the Barking Riverside development is relatively fixed as part of an agreed master plan for this area and is therefore not a part of the route that can be significantly altered by DLRL.
The plan below shows routes that were considered between Gallions Reach and Dagenham Dock. A decision on a preferred route option was made in Winter 2007.
