It is important that those people living and working in the surrounding area or those interested in the planning of this major new community in the Thames Gateway should be able to comment. DLR has maintained regular communication with people affected by the scheme, including distributing leaflets to over 60,000 households and consulting with residents, businesses and government and community groups.
The first leaflet distributed in early 2007 focussed on the objectives of the scheme and the potential destination. The second leaflet sent in summer 2007 provided details of the route options. In addition to this three exhibitions were held in July 2007 at Castle Green, St Marks Community Centre and CEME.
From the 2300 responses received:
- Over 95% of respondents thought that extending the DLR east through Barking Riverside was a good idea.
- 93% of respondents supported the idea of a new DLR station at Dagenham Dock.
- Over 78% of people would use the extension.
- Commuting and shopping were the most popular reasons given for using the extension and the city and Canary Wharf were suggested to be the most popular destinations.
A third leaflet was sent in November 2007 outlining the preferred route.
DLR has been actively consulting with key stakeholders regarding possible route options. From public responses and stakeholder feedback received, DLR was able to take a preferred route option forward. Throughout the design process, DLR has considered possible alternative options that could improve the scheme and reduce the impact on the surrounding area.
