Planning for the future - Increasing capacity on the DLR network

Docklands Light Railway Limited (DLRL) is proposing to increase the capacity of the DLR line between Bank/Tower Gateway and Lewisham. The preferred option is to introduce longer trains.

This will require longer station platforms, strengthening of viaducts and bridges, new railcars and depot expansion at Beckton. On 29 June 2004 DLRL submitted an Order under the Transport and Works Act 1992 seeking the authorisation required to begin the construction works associated with the project. All being well, the longer trains could be running between Bank and Lewisham by 2009.

A statutory consultation period began when the Order was submitted, whereby members of the public could formally support, make representation or object to the Order, as applied for. Over 100 letters of support were received by the Secretary of State for Transport and 69 objections. As a result, it was announced that a Public Inquiry would take place. The Public Inquiry commenced on 8th February 2005.
