New and improved cycle parking provision is planned at both new and existing DLR stations with the objective of delivering high quality consistent cycle parking at all DLR stations. We will also work towards creating strategic ‘cycle hubs’ at key DLR stations to provide extra facilities, events, and information about cycling.
Our four key objectives are to:
- To improve cycle parking at stations to deliver a better quality, safer and more convenient cycling environment
- To promote activities to provide people with information,
skills and positive examples that will encourage them to cycle - To work with partners to improve cycle links to DLR stations to make cycling feasible as part of longer journeys
- To maximise the shared benefits to cyclists through co-ordination with other relevant organisations, programmes and initiatives
Shadwell Station
Improved cycle parking facilities have been delivered at Shadwell station. DLR passengers are able to cycle to Shadwell station and secure their bikes before continuing their journey on the DLR. A custom made cycle shelter has been designed for the DLR and Shadwell is the first one to be installed.
Facilities at Shadwell include:
- Space for twelve bikes under cover
- CCTV coverage
- Cycle stands you can lock both front and back wheels and frame to
- Solar powered lighting
- Public art
The cycle parking facilities at Shadwell station won ‘Best Cycle Facility’ at the 2008 London Cycling Awards and won the ‘Cycling Improvements’ award at the 2009 London Transport Awards.
Other cycling hubs
A new cycling hub has also now been delivered at Gallions Reach DLR station.
Funding has been secured for the 2008/09 financial year and other stations being looked at include Greenwich, Lewisham, Island Gardens and stations along the London City Airport route.
Cycle Hub Events
On Thursday 14 August 2008 a DLR Bike Breakfast was held at Shadwell station between 7.30-09:00am to celebrate the new cycle hub. Around a hundred cyclists enjoyed a free breakfast and picked up a DLR goody bag. Evans Cycles were also on hand doing bike checks.
Similar events are planned across the DLR network and details will be posted here.
