Docklands Light Railway - Three-carriage Capacity Enhancement: Station Upgrades
Skip to navigationA number of station platforms cannot be extended as they are built underground or because of a lack of space. Three-carriage trains stopping at this station will operate using selective door opening – where the first two sets of doors and the last two sets of doors remain closed while the train is at the platform.
Three-carriage upgrade works for stations on the Beckton branch of the network will begin in autumn 2009. This work will be completed by early 2011.
All Saints
The upgrade works at this station involved extending the existing staggered platforms to the south. Work to move a track crossover slightly further to the south has also been completed. An emergency walkway has been installed to the south east of the station.
Bank
Bank station will close from December 2009 for five weeks while track remodelling, signalling works and testing is undertaken as part of the three-carriage upgrade works.
Beckton
The platforms at this station will be extended to the east.
Work on this branch of the DLR network will begin in autumn 2009, and will be completed by early 2011.
Blackwall
The platforms at Blackwall have been extended to the east.
Bow Church
There were a number of constraints around Bow Church station that meant extending the platforms here was more difficult than at most other stations. The platforms have been extended to the south where there was more space available and much of the work could be performed without disrupting train services. The southbound platform tapers slightly in order to minimise the amount of land required adjacent to the existing tracks. An additional staircase on the down platform has also been installed, as well as an additional entrance/exit leading from Ranhill Way.
Crossharbour
The platforms at this station have been extended at the north end of station, and new stairs to the concourse installed.
The platform extensions are open, and works continue to the concourse on the north side of Pepper Street.
Custom House for ExCeL
The platforms will be extended to the west.
Work on this branch of the DLR network will begin in autumn 2009, and will be completed by early 2011.
Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich
The existing platforms are too short to accommodate three-carriage trains at Cutty Sark, which is an underground station. This station will use selective door opening, where the first two sets and the last two sets of doors of a three-carriage train will remain closed when at the station.
Deptford Bridge
The south end of the platforms have been extended, and a new canopy installed at the north end of both platforms.
Devons Road
The close proximity of the Devons Road bridge which crosses the DLR tracks to the north of the station means that both platforms have been extended to the south, where there is space available. An emergency overbridge has also been installed.
East India
The platforms at this station have been extended to the east. Additional staircases from the concourse to the platforms have also been installed.
Works at this station will be complete in late 2009.
Elverson Road
There is not enough room at Elverson Road to extend the platforms for three-carriage trains, so this station will use selective door opening for these longer trains.
Gallions Reach
This station will operate using selective door opening when a three-carriage train stops at this station. The station is due for completion in early 2011.
Work on this branch of the DLR network will begin in autumn 2009, and will be completed by early 2011.
Greenwich
The platforms at the south end of this station have been extended, and the emergency staircase to southbound platform has been replaced.
Limehouse
A new concourse has been installed and platforms extended at the eastern end of the station. A new canopy runs the full length of station, and a new lift and staircase has been installed at the east end of the station serving both platforms. There is a also new entrance to the station from Branch Road.
A new interchange bridge allowing easy transfer from the c2c westbound platform to the eastbound DLR platform is under construction. The staircase on the westbound platform has also been replaced.
The station is due for completion in November 2009.
Lewisham
The platforms have been extended at the north end of the station.
Mudchute
The platforms have been extended at the north end of the station and a third platform has been created. New canopies have been installed on all platforms.
Prince Regent
The island platform at this station will be extended at the western end. An additional lift at the eastern end of the station will be installed, and the staircase will be widened.
Work on this branch of the DLR network will begin in autumn 2009, and will be completed by early 2011.
Pudding Mill Lane
The platform at Pudding Mill Lane will undergo a minor extension. Three-carriage trains stopping at this station will use selective door opening.
Works at this station will be complete in late 2009.
Royal Albert
Selective door opening will be introduced where the first and last doors of a three-carriage train will remain closed when a train is at the station.
Work on this branch of the DLR network will begin in autumn 2009, and will be completed by early 2011.
Royal Victoria
Both platforms have been extended and an accessibility ramp has been installed near Victoria Road.
Work at this station will be complete in November 2009.
Shadwell
The platforms have been extended to the east, and a new emergency exit to the ground level has been installed.
South Quay
A new South Quay station has been built 125m to the east of the old station, in order to accommodate three-carriage trains.
Read more about the new South Quay station.
Tower Gateway
The station has been completely refurbished, including a new horseshoe-style platform which makes it easier for passengers to get on and off the train. The platform and track have been remodelled for three-carriage trains. New canopies have been installed to provide better protection from the weather.
The station was closed for eight months while construction work took place. It reopened to passengers in March 2009.
Westferry
A new concourse has been installed and the existing platforms extended at the east end of the station. A new canopy has been installed along the full length of the station, and a new lift and stairs installed at east end of the station to both platforms allowing access from Westferry Road.
The station is due for completion in late 2009.
West India Quay
A new flyunder track has been installed between Westferry and Canary Wharf which bypasses West India Quay station. The flyunder is only used by trains travelling southbound from Bank to Lewisham during the morning and afternoon peak periods. All other trains stop at West India Quay.
Platform 1 at West India Quay will no longer be used in order to allow this flyunder to operate. The other platforms have been extended to south to accommodate three-carriage trains.
Note:
Bank, Beckton Park, Canary Wharf, Canning Town, Cyprus, Heron Quays, Poplar, West Silvertown, Pontoon Dock, London City Airport, King George V, Langdon Park, Woolwich Arsenal and Stratford stations already have platforms long enough to accommodate three-carriage trains and require no major platform upgrade works.
Depots
DLR is expanding the existing train depot at Beckon to accommodate the 55 new vehicles which will make up the longer three-carriage trains.
Code of Construction Practice
Most construction impacts are controlled by adherence to a Code of Construction Practice (CoCP). The draft CoCP prepared for the three-carriage scheme was developed through discussions with the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham and other appropriate statutory bodies.
The draft represents a level of mitigation to which the DLRL is committed and this has been taken into account in the EIA. The CoCP sets out the measures that are undertaken by the Contractor (i.e. the organisation DLRL selects to build the scheme) to ensure site safety and good site practice with regard to the environment during construction works. The CoCP contains relevant statutory codes, standards and legislation applicable to the regulation of construction practice and its effects on health and safety and the environment.
It sets out a variety of good practice procedures to control noise, dust, site discharges and works traffic and measures to protect groundwater and aquifers during works.
