Construction and Station Modification
Construction to enable DLR to operate three-carriage trains is well under way. The main design and build contract was awarded to Taylor Woodrow on 3 May 2007 and involves:
- Extending station platforms to accommodate three-carriage trains
- Remodeling Tower Gateway station
- Improvement works at Bank station
- A new South Quay station, built 200m east of the existing station
- Strengthening of viaducts and bridges; and
- Improvements to major junctions adjacent to Bank, West India Quay and Canning Town to improve train reliability and frequency at these busy locations
The majority of this work is being carried out during weekends and at night. Taylor Woodrow is committed to limiting disruption and inconvenience to local residents and passengers. If you have any concerns about the construction works in your area, please call the dedicated construction hotline: 0800 033 6380.
Three-carriage construction works on the north, west and south routes will be completed in early 2010. Construction on the Beckton route will be completed in early 2011.
Tower Gateway
Tower Gateway station was closed from June 2008 to March 2009 for major upgrade works to allow three-carriage trains to operate into the station. These works will help to reduce congestion at the station by providing more platform space.
Delta Junction Upgrade – West India Quay/Poplar Junction
The Delta Junction is the point where a number of DLR routes meet just to the north of West India Quay station. The junction’s current layout places a restriction on the frequency of DLR services that can operate. As part of the upgrade works, DLR has changed the layout of the tracks at the junction to improve operations and allow more trains to run during peak times.
Three -carriage funding secured for Beckton route
DLR has confirmed funding for an £18.2m upgrade which will increase capacity by 50 percent on the Beckton route in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This funding means upgrade work can start on this branch of the network before the end of 2009, making the entire DLR network three-carriage ready by early 2011.
