It is important that those people living and working in the
surrounding area or those interested in the planning of this major new
community in the Thames Gateway should be able to comment. DLR has
maintained regular communication with people affected by the scheme,
including distributing leaflets to over 60,000 households and consulting
with residents, businesses and government and community groups.
Four consultation leaflets were distributed to homes and businesses
along the route. Three public exhibitions were also held. From the 2,300
responses received:
- Over 95% of respondents thought that extending the DLR east through Barking Riverside was a good idea
- 93% of respondents supported the idea of a new DLR station at Dagenham Dock
- Over 78% of people would use the extension
- Commuting and shopping were the most popular reasons given for
using the extension and the City and Canary Wharf were suggested to be
the most popular destinations
DLR actively consulted key stakeholders regarding possible route
options. From public responses and stakeholder feedback received, DLR
was able to develop a preferred route for the extension. Throughout the
design process, DLR considered possible alternative options that could
improve the scheme and reduce the impact on the surrounding area.
