  • Langdon ParkLangdon Park station is located on the DLR route between Poplar and Stratford. This page provides information about the background and development of this station.

    Background

Research was undertaken in 2002 by Docklands Light Railway Limited (DLRL) into the proposal to build a new station on the DLR between 2 existing stations: All Saints and Devons Road. This research indicated the best and most practical location would be at the site of a pedestrian bridge over the railway linking Carmen Street and Bright Street, next to the Langdon Park itself.

The purpose of providing a new station was to:

    • provide much needed access to public transport for local residents and businesses
    • serve both Langdon Park and Langdon Park school
    • enable the new residential development next to the new station

    Consultation

A combination of project open days, leafleting and website consultation was conducted to provide the opportunity for the local community to provide input into the project, both during the early and later phase of planning of the station. A formal consultation period was also provided after DLRL submitted the planning application for the new station.

During the design process the project team worked with several key stakeholders including Leaside Regeneration Limited, Poplar HARCA and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

    Construction

Detailed design and construction of Langdon Park station was carried out by Costain Limited. After awarding the contract in October 2006 construction began on site in spring 2007. Firstly the existing footbridge was demolished, the platform units were then installed before building the new canopies and overhead footbridge. The work was done during engineering hours, around the live railway and during a limited number of weekend closures.

    Stations

The design of Langdon Park station reflects the community's desire for a modern landmark station. The platform canopies use innovative materials to maximise natural daylight to platforms. The station's replacement footbridge improves access over the railway line, safety and visibility - offering open views of the wider area. The lift towers are integrated with the bridge, designed to act as beacons, using glass panels clad with metal louvers ensuring making a distinctive and visible addition to the landscape.

The station also includes cycle parking as part of the DLR cycle strategy. Three pieces of public art have been incorporated, more information about DLR Art is provided here.
